Attention Grabbing Science Picture Books

I love starting off the year with great science demos, read alouds, and unexpected activities. For the last few years I have taught an elementary science lab class in addition to 6th grade science.

Here are some of my favorite read aloud books:

This book is a must for grades K-2 and kids love the "Ewww!" factor. Never, ever, ever eat your boogers. Great message and science information about boogers and germs. Just think, after reading this book you will have less booger eaters in your presence. Win win!!!

Ada Twist is a thinker and her parents don't know what to do with her intense curiosity. Then they decide to embrace it. They won't let her experiment by putting the cat in the washer but they do help her out. Ada's curiosity is contagious and her whole second grade class tests bad smells.

Here are some of my other favorite science read alouds.

Have you ever thought of a wacky experiment. Here are some doozies. Science doesn't always work out. Can you grow things in your brother's shoe? Can you only eat ketcup? Funny experiments that get kids saying, "Ew!"

What is science? This is a great book for introducing pre-K thorugh 2nd graders to what science is and how everything is science!

I love this baby book for planet Earth. I even give it as a gift at baby showers. It is so cute and educational. Baby Earth had a cranky stage and a stage with dinosaurs. I love this planet!

I use this book with 5th and 6th graders to show how a cell is larger than an atom. Little pygmy shrew, you are small but not as small as organisms in a drop of water!

Who doesn't love a blue whale? They are pretty huge! How many blue whale's would fit on Mt. Everest?

I read a section a day to my middle school coding class. Coding is tough and we make a lot of mistakes and mistakes aren't all bad. Most inventions started as a mistake trying to make something else. 6-8th grade students remind me to read a section if I forget. They love it. It really sets the tone that mistakes are ok!
